What Are Hazard Signs
Hazard Signs are pictures, signs, or images that are meant to act as warnings or prohibitory messages against dangerous roads, material, location, object, electronic current, and so on.
These signs are put up and regulated by law and are governed by statutory requirements.
These signs are extremely helpful in making people aware of impending dangers at different locations, properties, roads, and industrial areas or businesses such as warehouses, loading docks, distribution centres and transit hubs.
Hazard signs may be of varying colours depending upon what kind of message they wish to convey. Some of the most common colour and background you are likely to encounter on a hazard sign is black text on a yellow background to allow better readability. Most of these signs and warnings are depicted inside a triangle. The objective of a hazard sign is to convey a message quickly upon being seen rather than written warnings. In some cases, they also serve as supplements to written warnings.

Things to Know Before Installing a Hazard Sign
To make sure that a hazard sign serves its intended purpose of conveying the messages correctly and at the right time, there are a few things you must know and adhere to. These regulations are also prescribed by the Australian standard for hazard sign AS 1319.
- The hazard sign should be large enough to be easily identified by people without any doubt. Therefore pay adequate attention to its size.
- Consider the environment where the sign will be installed, the amount of available lighting, and viewing distance. Assuming that all factors above are favourable, the sign must be displayed in a prominent position.
- The size of a Pictogram hazard sign must be at least 15 mm per metre of viewing distance
- The text size for upper case letters should be 5 mm per metre of viewing distance and 4mm per metre of viewing distance for lower case letters.
Type of Hazard Signs
General Warning: These are signs that warn the people of generic dangers around certain areas, location, or buildings. They generally display a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. It is used in a variety of situations including, traffic regulation, factories, warehouses, etc.
Poisonous Substances Hazard Sign: These signs warn people about the presence of poisonous substances in certain areas (mostly factories) and to be careful and wear protective gear. These signs are depicted by a skull and crossbones portraying death in no uncertain terms.
Traffic Warning Sign: These signs are used to regulate traffic, prohibit vehicles and/or people from taking up certain roads or routes, and warn them of impending dangers on certain roads.
At times, the traffic police may use temporary hazard signs to control or divert vehicle and/or pedestrian traffic.
Danger Warning: The Danger hazard signs act as deterrents prohibiting people from doing something or accessing a location that may prove life-threatening. These signs are usually marked with a red background and white text displayed in big bold uppercase letters.
Instructions Sign: These signs educate users about what to do or not do in a particular location; such as wearing a helmet in a building construction zone, wearing safety harnesses, indicate prohibited areas and so on.
Fire Sign: These signs educate the staff and people of locations where fire alarms are installed, fire-fighting equipment is kept, and which emergency route to take in case of fire.
Emergency Information Sign: The Emergency Information sign conveys information regarding emergency services like exits in a building, first aid, safety equipment, and emergency helpline contact information.
